The University System of Maryland’s William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation recently announced the award of 29 mini-grants to faculty at 18 Maryland public higher education institutions for open educational resources (OER) development. Jessica Adams, Assistant Professor, Mathematics, Harford Community College, was awarded a $1,500 Adopt/Adapt mini-grant for her statistics course. The award was funded by Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiatives High-Impact OER Mini-Grant Program. With OER grant funding, faculty develop learning materials that can save students money by replacing traditional textbooks.

As an Adopt/Adapt grantee, Adams will participate in a one-hour pre-workshop webinar on OER Adoption planning; participate in a one-day face-to-face High-Impact OER Adoption workshop designed to help faculty adopt existing OER and prepare their course for delivery; teach at least one section of her course using OER during the fall 2018 semester; reduce instructional materials costs to less than $40 per student and replace traditional textbooks with accessible and openly licensed instructional materials; create an OER sustainability plan that addresses the resources needed to maintain and sustain the use of OERs in the targeted course; be willing to participate in at least one faculty interview or focus group; attend a High-Impact OER Mini-Grant Program capstone event in spring 2019; and share outcomes of OER adoption at a local or state professional development event.
