What can one possibly learn from a mouse’s story? Debbie Jennings, a creative writing adjunct instructor with Harford Community College since 2014, answers the question in her first children’s chapter book Mia, Ripples in the Water. Her readers know her as D.A. Jennings.

Mia is making her mark on the children’s literary stage with international recognition. She recently won the bronze medal in the 2020 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards for her first children’s fiction chapter book, won the 2020 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards for both Middle-Grade Fiction and Best Cover Design, was a finalist in the 2020 International Book Awards - Children’s Fiction, and has received five-star ratings from the San Francisco Book Review and Kids BookBuzz.

Mia is Jennings’ fourth book and she credits her family for initially inspiring Mia's adventures and encounters. Family involvement continued with her husband providing strategic editing input and her daughter contributing artwork to grace the cover of the book and interior art for each chapter. She also credits the members of the Harford Writers’ Group for their helpful critiques throughout the writing process.

Her first online noncredit class with Harford Community College, The Fundamentals of Creative Writing, will begin on February 2 and run through March 9 in the spring 2021 semester, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. Register here.
