"Try to connect with your professors . . . they're always more than willing to help and extend their knowledge to someone who is willing to try to learn."
What's the recipe for success? Just ask Keith Lowe, Harford Art + Design alum, Class of 2011. He took his higher education goals, added some grit and determination, mixed it with a love for design, threw in a bit of social media marketing, and is now enjoying a rewarding artistic career.
A Havre de Grace native and Harford Tech High school graduate, Keith Lowe chose Harford as his next step after high school. He calls Harford a "proud steppingstone for me in my formative years exploring art and design." Keith cites faculty members Ken Jones, Jim McFarland and Heidi Neff as his most memorable instructors, and credits them for helping him to discover all that art and design could be and create his foundation for the future. Professor Ken Jones especially made an impression on Keith, saying that Ken opened his eyes to so many new mediums during his classes and once he saw these possibilities, he was hooked. Ken remains a mentor and friend to Keith still today.
After receiving his AA in Graphic Design at Harford, Keith continued his higher ed journey and found a new love for design at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL, where he graduated with a BA in Graphic Design as well as an AA in Art History. He stayed in Florida, where his skills took him into the world of advertising. He now works as an art director for a local agency. Keith's drive and talent also keeps him working as a freelance artist, gaining clients like Secret Tiki Temple, Winnie Lou (a dog treat company in Colorado), Mover & Shaker Co. (a bartender lifestyle brand), and several mid-century modern antique stores. One of Keith's most recent and significant projects was a poster he created for a show for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), of which he is a member. After using some social media marketing skills, Keith's poster design was seen by up-and-coming country music artist Orville Peck, who recently released his debut album. The musician reached out to Keith, requesting to use his artwork during his upcoming tour. Orville Peck connected Keith to Sony Music and his design is now part of the musician's initial merchandising. Keith said he was "floored to have such a rising artist reach out to me on my social media" but he's also extremely proud of his work.
What's Keith's advice to students coming to Harford? "Try to connect with your professors and ask questions. From my experience, they're always more than willing to help and extend their knowledge to someone who is willing to try to learn." Keith also says, "Without their passion for teaching, I can't imagine I'd have the same appreciation for art that I do now."
Harford is excited to see what's next for Keith and his career. Check out his portfolio and connect with Keith Lowe on Instagram.
